Lat Tali Lat & Ho Li Chow @ Damansara Kim

This winsome new neighbourhood cafe founded by friends Joanne (she manages stuff) & Li May (she cooks stuff) infuses a homey, personal touch into its setting & food - Papa Yong's Spaghetti Bolognese (RM17.90) strives to replicate the pleasures of a pasta that Li May's father relished on a trip to Switzerland in 1975, while the GNS (RM10.50; a glass noodle salad) is a nod to the northern Thai heritage of the chef's mom. Fresh, no-fuss flavours, washed down with lemongrass tea & cha yen.

73 Jalan SS 20/11, Damansara Kim, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Lunch & dinner, Wed-Mon. Tel: 03-7733-7373

Kitchen commandant Aunty Sue, whose family hails from Penang, keeps a steady watch over Ho Li Chow's Malaysian comfort-fare offerings; the selection is compact, but everything's worth sampling, from the rich, hearty lam mee (RM10) to the assam laksa, enjoyably tasty though more mellow than Air Itam's (RM7), to the firm, fairly fragrant nasi lemak (RM10 with tender pork curry & chicken). On Saturdays, household-recipe specials such as painstakingly prepared acar fish are available; Ho Li Chow is becoming a popular neighbourhood kopitiam, & its menu is expected to expand over time (siu yuk & duck rice?).

Golden Bird's Nest Malaysia

When we were kids, edible bird's nest sounded like a magical elixir, with trusted traditionalists championing the consumption of bird's nest soups to boost vitality, speed up healing, maintain youthfulness & enhance the complexion. But until recent years, bird's nest products often seemed elusive, in terms of both cost & availability. So it was a pleasure this month to sample the signature offering of Golden Bird's Nest, a new Malaysian purveyor of quality bird's nest beverages, delivered to your doorstep.

These are jars of pure, nourishing goodness, homemade with plenty of care, relying on double-boiled premium bird's nests, bottled fresh in small batches daily, free of preservatives, chemicals, bleaches, artificial flavours or colouring. You'll receive them chilled in a box, ready to drink. We liked them a lot - an ideal refreshment for eat-clean enthusiasts, buoyed by a smooth, delicate texture from the gelatinous strands of bird's nest & an uplifting natural sweetness from organic sugarcane extract.

We'd happily sip on these tonics regularly even without the prized health benefits; rich in protein & calcium, these are great for kids & adults alike. Delivery is now available throughout peninsular Malaysia - contact Golden Bird's Nest at 6019-366-5555 for details. A box of six bottles costs RM180, while a dozen bottles are RM360. Our thanks to Golden Bird's Nest for the sampling.

Shugatori @ Damansara Uptown

Shugatori celebrates the crowd-pleasing desserts that have surged in popularity among the Klang Valley's young cafe-goers in recent years. The menu essentially showcases multiple varieties of honey toasts, pancakes & waffles - signatures include the Yin & Yang, a two-in-one thick combo of charcoal & classic toast, blanketed with soft meringue, partnered with meringue sticks, dragon fruit balls, cookies-&-cream ice cream & dark chocolate (RM27.90), & the Red Velvet, a pancake stack layered with tangy lemon mousse, topped with hokey pokey ice cream & encircled with caramel sauce (RM25.90). The toast could benefit from better butter & cleaner, more natural flavours, & the pancakes could be fluffier & fresher, but all in all, Shugatori is a cheerful place, & its hard-working founders clearly hope patrons will leave this origami bird-loving hangout on a happy high.
