Barat Vegetarian Restaurant @ Lorong Kurau, Bangsar

Into the West: Barat is a vegetarian restaurant that everyone can explore, whether you're herbivorous or not. Its irrepressibly friendly founders Meeta & Prabodh Sheth have nurtured a loyal following over the past two years with their first outlet, the casual Gujarati vegetarian joint Ganga, & they've clearly poured plenty of heart into their new effort too (Ganga & Barat are now neighbours on Bangsar's Lorong Kurau). Like Ganga, Barat is intentionally economical, belying its look as an upmarket venue - this is a beautiful establishment with compelling flourishes, including a mural by Indonesian illustrator Ines Katamso. But its cuisine leans in a different direction (the clue rests in the name Barat), looking to the Mediterranean for inspiration.

If you're visiting this week, Barat is exclusively serving a tasting menu that exceeds 10 courses, likely lasting more than two hours - the kicker is it costs only RM30 nett per person. Barat is blessed with an intelligent chef, Lingesh, who weaves both the fascinating & the familiar into his repertoire. Barat is still fine-tuning its selection - there were both hits & misses for us; we enjoyed the opening salvo of pumpkin soup tinged with the heat of ginger. The fried mandarin orange segments were fun, served warm, perhaps the citrus equivalent of pisang goreng, paired with with currants, rocket leaves & a sesame dressing that may not have been the perfect match for this ensemble. The watermelon gazpacho was a shot of pure perkiness, & the fried cheese with spiced jam seemed an easy crowd-pleaser, but our favourite was the couscous laced with a ravishingly nuanced curry, coupled with glazed baby carrots, grilled asparagus & pomegranate dressing. The caveat: There was an inconsistency in how this was served - for one of us, the couscous emerged comfortingly warm; for the other, completely cold.

Barat's grilled peppers stuffed with cheese & roasted plum tomatoes packed with prunes in herb oil prove that vegetarian fare can yield robust, punchy dynamics. We'd probably skip the patatas bravas though (the potatoes evoked mass-produced slices of fried wedges that you might find at a lesser mall outlet, partnered with tomato sauce that was somewhat textured but a bit too heavily salted). The pastas were a mixed bag - the aglio olio was under-seasoned, relying on the mushrooms, zucchini & grilled lemons for flavour; the pistachio carbonara with sun-dried tomatoes showed more promise, with a light nuttiness adding a mild extra dimension to the sauce, while the tomatoes provided bursts of chewy savouriness. Barat's sweeter offerings might nonetheless help customers leave relatively contented - the endives with berries should satiate fruit devotees, while a concluding trio of a house-made chocolate brownie, ice cream & peach in brandy proves uniformly pleasurable. Many of these recipes are expected to make it on Barat's a la carte menu, which should be unveiled within a week or two.

A bar upstairs should be ready soon too - it looks set to be a lovely space to linger over vegetarian tapas & wine.

Nam Heong Ipoh @ Da:Men USJ Subang

Ipoh's venerable Nam Heong kopitiam brand launches its first modern restaurant in the Klang Valley this month, promising heaps of hawker fare to partner with Ipoh's classic egg tarts, tau fu fah & white coffee. There's a real reason to rush here before the end of this month: Until Jan. 31, 2016, Nam Heong at the Da:Men Subang shopping mall is offering several of its signature dishes at an unbeatable opening promo price of RM2 per plate or bowl (excluding 6 percent GST), including chicken hor fun, chicken rice, char siu rice, siu yok rice, & best of all, char kuey teow sprinkled with cockles & crunchy bits of pork lard. It's a worthwhile bargain, especially since there seems to be no skimping on the ingredients in each serving - you could have a fuss-free meal with a glass of iced water for RM3 per person. A reminder: The offer is valid all day long till this Sunday only.

Sarang Cookery @ Galloway

Focusing on the soulful flavours of Peranakan cooking, Sarang Cookery brings together the talents of Christina (co-founder of the Sarang Galloway B&B lodgings), her hiking buddy Irlene & Malaccan Chitty chef Raj - it's a place for pie tee, ayam sioh, kari kapitan & assam heh, alongside other local favourites like mee bandung, lontong, assam laksa, soto ayam & much more.

Raj credits many of these recipes to his mother - our favourite might be the Udang Serai, featuring fresh, fleshy prawns complemented by cashews in a thick, tangy coconut milk gravy, fragrant with lemongrass, chillies & other herbs & spices; a serving for three to four customers costs RM19.50. Other rich & robust offerings include salted tenggiri fish cooked in lemak nenas (RM19.50) & boiled lady's fingers crowned with a punchy heh bee paste of dried prawns, shallots & chillies (RM10).

Sarang is now mainly a cafe, but it'll soon offer cooking classes too, so customers can learn to prepare crowd-pleasing fare like Pongteh Chicken, packed with potatoes & flavoured as per tradition with tau chew & gula melaka (RM15) & egg dishes like Telur Belanda with a tamarind kick (RM12) & Telur Cincalok, stuffed with prawns & seasoned with fermented shrimp (RM15).

We're fans of Sarang's Nasi Ulam, a lovely platter of steamed rice confidently crafted with a complex variety of local herbs, vegetables, prawns & dried fish (RM25 for a serving for two, with a 20-minute wait). With everything mixed together, it's invigoratingly textured & irrepressibly tasty, a wholesome way of having your carbs with plenty of nourishing fibre & protein.

A special surprise on Sarang's desserts list: The Gula Melaka Crepe is a one-of-a-kind wonder, constructed with roti jala, filled with bananas & flooded with palm sugar pieces & syrup, sprinkled with chopped chillies & bunga kantan - it's an acquired taste that not everyone will enjoy, with the spiciness of the chillies lingering on the palate, but it's an admirable experiment at conceiving something new with familiar ingredients, with each component masterfully proportioned. At only RM9, it deserves to draw adventurous patrons from VCR Cafe a few doors away; Sarang is also working on other possible novelties like chocolate cakes & cookies laced with sambal belacan. But if you're seeking something safer, Sago Gula Melaka should suffice (RM7.50).
