Eat and Cook's new Don-for-delivery series proves there are still satisfying surprises to be scooped up in rice bowls.
The Nasi Kandar Don does justice to the spirit of George Town - crisply fried spiced chicken, as lip-smacking as anything on Lebuh Campbell, with fish curry that channels the full-bodied flavours of Chulia Street, perfect to flood the rice. Instead of tenggiri, tuna is the fish, no less than otoro, lightly breaded to keep the succulent focus on the fattiest part of the fish belly. Mix it up with a chunky-tender octopus sambal, onsen egg, peanuts and pickled onions for a punchy, potent taste of Penang (RM64).
The Don series is extensive, with beef buffs well cared for. Sink your teeth into the Short Rib Don, showcasing 300-day grain-fed meat supplied by The Honest Butcher retailer in Sungai Buloh, thickly and tenderly fleshy, clean-tasting in completing the sauce-soaked rice, brightened and balanced with fresh kailan, ulam raja and pickled chillies for the perfect beef bowl (RM69).
