Come for the coffee and kombucha, stay for the cheese and chocolate: Atap brings together two former food truck owners under one roof, teaming up the talents of barista Christopher Chuah and sandwich specialist Fauzan Ruslan, who first met while running their respective trucks - Pagi Coffee Co and Griddle Grilled Cheese - in TTDI.
Fauzan specialises in grilled cheese sandwiches taken to intriguing new levels - try the one with shreds of beef tenderloin made creamy with a blend of mozzarella, Monterey Jack and blue cheeses, more punchy than pungent since the blue is a relatively mellow Danish, layered with house-made caramelised onions in beautifully crisped bread, the whole-wheat work of another Subang artisan, The Carpenter's Daughter bakery (RM19; add RM1 for a gentle tinge of truffle oil).
Christopher handles the beverages: White espresso-based coffee is currently recommended with a blend roasted by Klang's Seraph Awaken (RM11), with oat milk as a possible dairy substitute (add RM4). You'll also find Beast Bucha's small-batch kombucha, fizzier and livelier than many, in flavours like beetroot, slow-fermented and 100% organic (RM14), as well as Pagi's own chocolate drinks, deep and dark with concentrated natural cacao nuances, cold-steeped for at least 12 hours with Cocova's Malacca-cultivated single-origin chocolate buttons, blended with a choice of almond, coconut or dairy milk (RM15).
Atap is tucked in a second-floor room with a little loft within Subang's Wayang Kulit Tatu tattoo studio.
