A former factory that once churned out industrial yarn is now reincarnated as a cavernous cafe that whips up comfort fare & coffee, founded by diversely talented collaborators who include an erstwhile radio DJ, an ex-barista trainer & an arts instructor.
Lots of space to explore here - more than 10,000 square feet, in fact. WhupWhup's team has imbued a playful, personal touch into everything from the mise-en-scene (we like the leafy flourishes & the piano in the backdrop) to the menu (which promises complimentary water from The Fountain Of Youth, & choices of coffee with sobriquets like 'Slim Shade' & 'Whitest Boy Alive').
WhupWhup has clearly put a lot of effort into presenting an interesting menu that spans French & other influences. Nu' Yolk features fresh, tender scallops with a sweet, custard-like salted egg yolk puree & shaved parmesan (RM35), while Duck 3 Ways comprises a choice of spaghetti or fettuccine with meaty duck breast, duck bacon bits & salted duck egg yolk (RM28).
Our favourite order here looks the simplest but tastes both memorable & satisfying: Rustic toast with a crunchy, textured bite, topped with a creamy, coffee-infused carrot butter spread (RM12 for two pieces). Alternatively, WhupWhup's interpretation of Cuban sandwiches showcases a choice of chicken or beef with cheese (RM20), while the wine-marinated, slow-cooked beef stew with mash & veggies is a solid bet for a hefty meal, conveying strong value for RM28. Coffee & craft beer are available.
WhupWhup is tricky to locate, tucked at the end of an industrial street. But there's free parking; look for the 'Safety First' & 'No Smoking' signs that betray the location's earliest origins. Event bookings & retail space reservations can be accommodated.
