Seeking sushi at a couple of Japanese eateries, starting with Zenjo, which exudes a calm elegance at Empire Damansara.
Zenjo whips up a solid selection of sushi rolls - oyster makis (RM29), smoked duck makis (RM32), unagi chilli makis (RM28) & more, competently prepared. No terrific surprises, but no terrible shocks either.
The menu's wide-ranging enough for a full meal - from satisfying starters like monk fish liver (RM23) & mentaiko (RM12) ...
... to mains of Japanese squid grilled with sea salt (RM30) & fried rice with eel (RM28), washed down with sake & green tea.
Also on our sushi-loving itinerary: Yoshino, a slightly more casual restaurant at Bangsar South's Wisma Life Cafe.
Mentaiko fans can opt for salmon mentai sushi (RM8) & tamago mentai (RM6); both lack the melt-in-the-mouth magnificence of the most excellent versions out there, but neither is truly lacklustre. Enjoyable enough for the price, all things considered.
Eel & avocado thickly laid on top, crab sticks & cucumber nicely stuffed in the middle - a maki that's easy to like. RM25.
Ditto for the pasta with crisp soft-shell crab & creamy poached egg. Can't-fail combo, in terms of triumphant textural contrasts.
