RGB @ The Bean Hive At Damai & GTower

RAW reincarnated: This might look like an nondescript residence in an evergreen neighbourhood, but its placidly innocent facade is deceptive. RGB & The Bean Hive is set to become one of KL's buzziest new cafes, run by the caffeine-passionate pioneers who spearheaded the recently closed RAW Coffee in Wisma Equity.
Entries on RAW Coffee: February 2011 & September 2012.

Step boldly through the signboard-free entrance of this bungalow on Ampang's Jalan Damai & breathe easy once you spot the coffee-brewing counter in this spartanly clean, brightly white-walled interior. The team members at RGB - which stands for either 'Roast Grind Brew' or 'Rather Good Beans,' depending on whom you interrogate - were initially taken aback when we popped in as surprise visitors, but they proved thoroughly warm, winning & welcoming.

The place, nicknamed 'The Bean Hive,' still seemed like a work in progress on a recent afternoon; RGB aims to become a full-fledged multifunction venue that'll not only house a coffee bar but a boutique micro-roastery, vegetarian eatery & events space.

Farther inside, here's the comfiest section of RGB, filled with cushy chairs; on a calm occasion, we could linger for hours.

London Calling: Check out the British-themed corner with a couch that's certain to host dozens of derrieres in the week ahead.

Love the choice of novels for browsing; this is the rare place where Goethe's Faust shares shelf space with Sex And The City.

RGB's menu will furnish a sense of comforting familiarity for RAW loyalists: the Tempeh Lettuce Tomato coconut-oil wrap is back, though RGB says the recipe has been fine-tuned even further. It's a terrific treat for fans of tempeh; other wraps available include ones with eggplant & freshly made pesto, hummus & roasted veggies, or four cheeses & tomato.

Bargain-hunters, take note: It's well worth heading to RGB on Thursday or Friday this week (August 28 & 29). As an opening promotion, these wraps - as well as most of RGB's other food offerings - will be sold at RM10 nett per plate. Only about a five-minute drive from KLCC, RGB's the ideal lunchtime oasis for folks working in the city centre.

We polished our plate too for this vegetarian burger; RGB's patties are produced on-site with components that change from time to time. Our patty comprised a chewing-optional blend of broccoli & mushrooms, partnering perfectly with a nice, crisp bun with an enjoyably yeasty flavour. Oh, and for health-watchers, there's no microwave here.

Other options include angel hair pasta, frittata, pumpkin soup & a salad tossed with house-made mayo that's prepared fresh daily, with the selection expected to expand eventually. These past years of experience have done a world of good for the food creators of RAW/RGB; their wholesome recipes are more delicious than ever, with convincingly balanced tastes & textures.

Ask for RGB's chocolate brownie, served with yoghurt & orange zest. Densely gooey, richly nuanced, it's captivating.

And of course, coffee; RGB baristas Han & May currently strut their stuff with Sumatran Mandheling. Times have changed dramatically for KL's third-wave coffee scene since we first visited RAW years ago, back when it was still an unknown brand in an infrequently patronised location in a city where great coffee remained rare. And here's some more encouraging news: RGB is also scheduled to open another outpost next week at GTower, so watch for that too.

Housekeeping notes: RGB at Jalan Damai is open Thursday & Friday this week, 8am-4pm. It'll be closed this weekend (Saturday-Sunday), but will officially launch on Monday, Sept. 1, & remain open everyday, closing early in the evening. The other GTower branch will probably also maintain office hours.

'Hidden cafes' & coffee bars at pleasantly unexpected locations or with acronyms for their names have performed very popularly in the Klang Valley throughout this past year; expect RGB to keep the track record running. Thumbs way, way up for this revival of a potentially resurgent favourite. Expect to hear much more about RGB in the weeks to come.

Preview: POKC - People of Kheng Chew @ Damansara Uptown

People of Kick-Ass Cafes, unite! POKC - which stands for People of Kheng Chew - will start serving customers this week, bringing a fresh take on cafe fare in Damansara Utama.

Many thanks to POKC's co-founders Karen & Sheena for this sneak peek into their new venue, which takes up four floors of a Damansara Uptown shop-lot. Karen's talent & experience in design arts are on ravishing display at POKC, which showcases a thoughtful mix of charming furnishing - some custom-built, others salvaged from kopitiams & repainted - & Italian-made tables.

Only the first two lower levels are open for customers (the top two comprise the administrative offices & worker accommodation), but both are beautiful. Everything from the floors to the cushions will be feverishly & deservedly photographed in the near future.

As its name indicates, People of Kheng Chew - which hopes to become a vibrant community hub for fellowship - is a tribute to Hainanese heritage (hurray for us!), with a nod especially to Karen's late grandfather. Expect time-honoured comfort cooking with contemporary twists.

Buffalo shooters of chicken wings on glasses of a sweet-savoury, secret-recipe sauce with hints of BBQ & tabasco condiments could prove compulsively edible; creatively composed, these are destined to show up on your social media feed sooner or later. Almost every angle seems like a terrifically engaging one.

Our top tip here: When it pops up on the menu, order POKC's interpretation of 'roti babi' - bountifully meaty, flourishing with flavour & juices, with the minced pork encased in soft, fluffy bread. A deep-fried delight with added heat from chillies, it's one of the best versions of 'roti babi' in the Klang Valley, sinfully oily but a stand-out that makes us happy that POKC serves pork.

POKC is proud of its chicken curry & lamb stew too - both are comfortingly creamy & satisfyingly balanced in taste, brimming with tender chunks of meat, evoking a warm sense of nostalgia. Customers from the ages of three to 103 would likely enjoy this.

Good gravy! Served with soft, fluffy Hainan bread purchased from Kepong, this is stress-banishing soul food to soothe the spirit.

POKC has got the chops - pork, lamb & chicken (the third's our choice), nicely seasoned & ideal for protein-lusting carnivores.

Hailam Mee with sambal, not something we often order, but we slurped up nearly every strand of this too. POKC hadn't finalised its menu at the time of this preview, so we have no prices, but they should be in line with expectations in this neighbourhood.

Prefer Western-type noodles? Spaghetti aglio olio with bacon, perennially crowd-pleasing, should be available by September.

Rounding up with chicken: POKC takes the classic Hainanese chicken chop & folds it into a pleasurable modern burger.

Chicken cordon bleu is a recipe we fell in love with two decades ago but haven't eaten in a long time now. POKC's nicely battered interpretation is excellent, accentuating everything we've ever liked about this dish. It tastes fresher & 'realer' than most of its counterparts.

Coffee lovers, have no fear: POKC is serious about its caffeine too. Expect fulfilling cups that pretty much meet the mark.

All in all, a cafe well worth checking out, offering fun feasts & an eclectically cool vibe; bookmark POKC for a visit soon.

Preview: Dinner Menu @ Sitka, Damansara Heights

More than four months after first opening, Sitka has finally embarked on serving dinners that rank among KL's most carefully crafted - only twice a week, Fridays & Saturdays, featuring recipes that reflect a commitment to raising the bar for what restaurants can offer. Freshly installed, starkly forested wallpaper forms a beautiful backdrop for evenings of edible enchantment.
Introduction to Sitka & its lunch menu: April 10 & April 23.

Many thanks to Jenifer & the Sitka team for this preview of what patrons can expect starting this Friday: Dinner will begin with lovely bread that we tore into with gusto, paired with butter (on a bed of black sesame seeds) that might seem magically softer than expected. The secret? It's whipped with beef fat. No need to spread it on the bread; simply use it as a divinely airy dip.

The concise menu's first section comprises up to three types of snacks: We like the linseed cracker (or flaxseed, if you prefer) - brittle-textured & nutty-tasting - crowned with creamy drops of avocado mousse & a crispy, nutrition-packed kale leaf. Sure, it's entirely gone in two or three mouthfuls, but it'll whet the appetite for more. RM17.

Alternatively, there's fried chicken with coconut cream, pressed pineapples & pickled cucumbers (RM20). It's an intriguing ensemble, with delicate nuances that compel you to concentrate on what you're tasting, but the chicken was the weakest link: a bit too little meat, too much nondescript batter. Still worth sampling though.

'Small plates' follow: Tender mackerel with almond creme fraiche, almond crumble, baby choy sum, gooseberries & dashi broth make for a remarkable combination that illustrates how hard Sitka works to source its ingredients - occasionally, you might even find the restaurant's co-owner at a port before dawn, waiting for the seafaring boats to return with their catch. This might prove more satisfying if the fish weren't cooked fully through, but that's a matter of preference.

For a protein-powered plate, try the raw smoked beef, which provides a pleasurably savoury chew, partnered with pickled yolk, radish & other accompaniments (RM50). It's something of a fun riff on steak tartare.

'Large plates' include luscious sea bass, magnificently moist, with dill, buttermilk & brassica veggies (RM60). This dish seems to define Sitka's ethos: Who needs Norwegian salmon when there's equal enjoyment to be found in Malaysian fish at its finest?

Wherever there's duck, count us in: Sitka's is served with temptingly pink flesh & a depraved layer of fat over a thick sauce tinged dark crimson with cherry & red wine, complemented by purple cabbage, fermented black bean & a fried bean curd roll stuffed with pulled confit of duck that instantaneously seizes the spotlight from everything else. RM65.

But what will haunt our memory the most is dessert, specifically the award-worthy white chocolate panna cotta, indelibly smooth & irrepressibly light, its comforting sweetness matched surprisingly & serendipitously by this garland of wood sorrel & Thai basil. RM30; if you eat only one thing for dinner at Sitka, make it this show-stopping sacrament of sumptuousness.

The beetroot sorbet - with malt crisp & bitter chocolate as a counterpoint - is also elegantly delicious in its own right. RM30.

Aussie wine starts at RM25 by the glass; all in all, dinners here seem to nimbly straddle the balance between being intimate & casual, though the cost of an evening's meal will understandably & easily surpass that for Sitka's lunch salads, baos & tacos.

The menu will evolve, with more mouthwatering marvels expected to emerge in the months ahead. Sweetbread with basmati, sichuan pepper & ginger? Sounds like the biggest of winners.
