Dao @ SS15 Subang

Run by three Ipoh-born siblings whose father has helmed a bean curd stall in Bercham for more than two decades, Dao is a fun new Subang cafe that specialises in soy milk-based desserts and drinks, both classic and contemporary. It's a friendly space with plenty of charm - check out the mural underpinned by the Lau family patriarch's old work tricycle and another wall that's been painstakingly pasted with more than 1,800 Happy Families game cards.

The Lau trio (a brother and two sisters) prepare their taufufah based purely on their family recipe, resulting in a bowl of satisfying goodness, smooth and pleasurably soft but not mushy, completed with a choice of ginger, brown or white syrup (RM3.50 for a substantial serving).

House-made milk is also available, in the traditional version (RM2.80) as well as another with the soybean skin having been removed before processing to reduce purine levels linked to uric acid (RM4.80). Both are refreshingly flavoursome and not too sweet.

Dao plans to launch a wider range of soybean-based desserts next week, including distinctive shaved ice creations and smoothie bowls. All in all, Dao does a delicious job of both extending and expanding a Malaysian family's cool-beans culinary legacy.
