Gavel @ Yap Ah Shak Road

Occupying a charming shop-house that has endured for decades in downtown KL, this British-owned restaurant is a nice new spot to consider for a casual meal. Gavel's name is a nod to the profession of two of its founders, who are auctioneers; its third founder is an experienced chef who built up Changkat Bukit Bintang's Magnificent Fish & Chips and Bangsar's Southern Rock Seafood Kitchen, so it's fair to forecast that the food here will be good.

Bidding starts at RM22 for the toasted croissant stuffed with fluffy scrambled eggs and sweetly tart tomato slivers, one of several all-day brunch dishes available. Given Gavel's link to respected seafood venues, it seems prudent to also order a poke bowl, with a choice of fresh grilled prawns or Norwegian salmon layered with Japanese rice, quinoa, edamame, green shoots and seaweed (RM26).

Day drinking is encouraged at Gavel - try the Dakin's Fizz (RM38; Thomas Dakin Manchester Gin, grapefruit, ginger, fizzy wine) or the classic Pimm's Cup (RM22), both thoroughly refreshing.

Service is warm; the mood is relaxed, with ballads by British acts like Coldplay and Ed Sheeran playing on the speakers.

Gavel
20 Jalan Yap Ah Shak, Off Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur. Open Mon-Fri, 8am-9pm; Sat, 9am-5pm. Tel: 03-2856-0509
