Felice Hoa @ Mont Kiara & Highland Viet @ Taman Mayang

This low-key Vietnamese cafe serves a solid selection of Saigon street-food favourites - Felice Hoa's pho bo proves notable for its rustic, coarse-textured beef balls, while its banh cuon is reasonably enjoyable too, with well-seasoned ground pork rolled in smooth steamed rice sheets. We also like the lemongrass chicken rice platter, thanks to the succulent, flavoursome meat; the only genuine lapse is the banh mi - it's an interesting version, relying on tender ciabatta bread instead of a baguette, but it's hobbled by slices of marinated pork & a garlic mayo spread that both taste strangely out of place, failing to complement the sandwich's other constituents. Prices are nonetheless fair for Mont Kiara; a meal here shouldn't surpass RM30 per customer.

Highland Viet offers a voyage through Vietnamese soul food, with hits & misses along the way; the soupier recipes fare best - bowls of noodles with pork trotters & quail eggs, as well as fish with tomatoes in a clear, tangy broth, supply sufficient satisfaction. The aromatic braised pork with hard-boiled eggs also delivers what most patrons might expect. But we'd skip Highland's banh mi, a timid & tepid imitation of the vibrant Vietnamese sandwich & its dynamic dimensions. Boiled rice with chicken is a flop too - dry, bland grains, alongside meat that tastes past its prime. And while the papaya smoothie sounds like a tempting thirst-quencher, it's a touch too sweet & not quite natural-tasting enough. Most dishes cost between RM10 & RM12.
