MIK Made-In Kefir

Don't fear the kefir: This fizzy, fermented beverage might be an unfamiliar sight in Malaysian supermarkets, but it could be making a mighty, probiotic-powered splash soon. KL's potential kefir craze kicks off this month with the launch of MIK (Made-In Kefir) in four beautifully bottled flavours: Ginger Turmeric Lime, Strawberry Juniper, Mango Cardamom & Coconut Passionfruit.

Linked to digestive well-being, kefir taps into the zeitgeist of health-concerned consumerism. MIK produces water kefir - basically filtered water with organic cane sugar, cultured with beneficial bacteria, infused with fruits & spices for extra nutrients. Chilled, it's like a refreshing, lightly carbonated soda, albeit with natural nuances & a pleasing purity of earthy-zesty flavours. Each flavour has a forte: Choose Mango Cardamom to lift the spirits & Ginger Turmeric Lime to soothe. Who needs the spa?

MIK Kefir is home-made & handmade in small batches by juice joyrider Wan Chiun & pastry perfectionist Mabel, both battle-hardened pros in KL's F&B landscape. The intricate bottle labels are by Russian-born, Malaysian-based illustrator Elena Kravchenko. MIK Kefir is currently sold at Ben's Independent Grocer in Publika (RM15 per 450 ml bottle), but you'll be able to buy it elsewhere before long, including at Publika's Fuyoh Art Bazaar, Aug. 29-30. Thanks to MIK for this enlivening treat.
