The Rolling Pin @ Plaza Damas 3, Sri Hartamas

Twirling into Sri Hartamas, The Rolling Pin puts a fun spin on Indian fare, with stimulating visual twists by chefs Rakesh Talwar & Abhishek Botadkar, both from Mumbai.

Fulfilling the promise of its name, the restaurant serves a selection of tandoor-cooked starters presented in rolling pins - thankfully, the food is more than superficially striking. From yoghurt-marinated chicken to minced lamb to mushrooms stuffed with cheese & spinach, these clay-oven offerings prove to be convincing specimens of the kitchen's capabilities.

The Rolling Pin's repertoire is sweeping; it'd take many visits to plough through the menu, but we enjoyed the creamy-crispy papri chaat (RM14; puri topped with potatoes, sprouts, chutney & sev chickpea noodles) & fluffy-spicy egg bhurji with pav bread (RM25) enough to contemplate coming back for the seafood specialities of Goan fish curry & prawn masala (RM32).

Devotees of dal (that's us!) will lap up the similar but even more sumptuous Delhi-style rajma, thick with tender kidney beans (RM20). Our only caveat is that a meal here won't be cheap - expect to spend slightly north of RM100 for a full-fledged feast for two. Service is sterling, & basic cocktails like Martinis & Mai Tais are expected to be introduced soon.
