Bmon Cafe @ Kota Damansara

Cosy & colourful, calm & casual, cheerful & charming, Kota Damansara's Bmon Cafe - spearheaded by Malaysian brothers Travis & Roy - supplies an excellent escape for the young-at-heart.

Visitors will be introduced to Bmon - a manga-style comic character created by Roy, inspired partly by the Doraemon series. The name 'Bmon' refers to a Chinese phrase that calls on people to pursue their dreams.

The story of Bmon, his girlfriend Mel & their pet elephant is showcased all across the cafe's walls, including beside the stairs that lead up to this first-floor venue. Bmon T-shirts, a cool collectable, are available for sale too.

Inside, customers can choose from multiple corners to fit their mood - we like the seats that face a painted landscape, meant to evoke the sense of sitting in a train & staring out the window. Otherwise, be spirited away by sinking into a nearby sofa or snatching a cushion at the tatami-influenced section.

Bmon's food is as fun as its setting - the signature should-try is the mighty-hearty Hippo In The Pond (RM14.90 nett). Creative comfort food, a super-chunky, steaming-hot potato croquette, crispy outside & creamy within, stuffed with everything from chicken sausage slices to crab sticks & corn, complemented by a hard-boiled egg & cheesy sauce. Limited servings everyday.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the mushroom wrap - RM12.90; served warm, well-executed with a moist, flavoursome medley of shiitake, portobello, button, golden & oyster mushrooms - as well as a peach-topped waffle that's tastily balanced with ice cream & crunchy cornflakes (the cafe plans to launch no fewer than eight waffle recipes this week). Bmon's offerings taste fresh & wholesome & seem to be prepared with heart; cakes by independent bakers are available too.

Bmon does several tempting beverages too, from the Bmon Plants (RM13; espresso with shaved dark chocolate, whipped cream & walnuts) to the gingerbread latte (RM10); beans are supplied by Johor's Coffee Nowhere. All in all, we enjoyed our time at Bmon, a place where it's easy to relax & feel at home; thanks to Travis & his warm-hearted team for hosting this lunch.
