Rebung @ Bangsar

A bright, busy restaurant where customers can feel entirely at home, thanks to the warm service by staff members who treat everyone like family.

Tempoyak with pucuk ubi & petai. Pleasantly creamy and aromatic; certainly not as stinky as we had expected.

Begedil. Light, addictively tasty potato patties that weren't the least bit oily. Would be better if they had been fried on order, but that's a minor quibble.

Ikan keli masak cili. Not my favourite fish, but this perfectly represents the core virtues of kampung cooking. Spicy, savoury and well-seasoned to the max.

Paru goreng (a tad too chewy) and telur itik masak lemak (lovely hard-boiled duck egg in rich, fragrant coconut milk). Other dishes worth sampling here include the fresh, crunchy ulam and meaty, piquant daging salai (all items can be ordered individually or selected from a RM43 dinner buffet).

Chicken & beef satay. Not the best in town, but satisfactory enough.

Pulut durian. Nicely prepared; tasted fragrant instead of pungent.

Pengat pisang. Ripe, sweet bananas in a sumptuously thick sauce.

Ais kacang. Looked appealing, but tasted average. More gula melaka would help.
